Subject : Karachi Eat 2015, brings all the foodies to the park
With the deteriorating law and order situation in the metropolis, the citizens of Karachi are forever starved for a family day out. The annual ‘Karachi Eat Festival’, held at the Frere Hall gardens, allows families and food aficionados to enjoy a collection of food offerings – from street food to high-end eateries – all in one place. Speaking to Geo.tv one of the organizers explained that the event was born out of their desire to do something for Karachi, to bring the community together in a city which has seen more than its share of violence and law and order problems. It seems the organizers hard work paid off, with patrons comparing the festival to the one held adjacent to Lake Michigan in Chicago. “This is better, because the food offered here is more to our liking,” said Quttubudin who has attended both food festivals.

Many recalled how the event reminded them of the Karachi they grew up in, which was safer and presented varying options for a family day out. Some hoped , that such events would be held at least 2-3 times a year while others complained that even with jumping castles, face painting, and handicraft activities, there still wasn't enough entertainment for the kids. With his young daughter in his arms, one festival-goer explained that as long as the children are having a good time, the family will stay all day. “If you’re going to bring a Pakistani family out and ask them to spend a day, you’ve got to give something for the kids to do, there has to be a lot for the kids to do,” he said. While the families thronged around tables, young revelers could be seen lazing on mats spread out at the Frere Hall gardens. They expressed their happiness at the affordable prices, which allowed them to enjoy a variety of offerings from high-end to the regular street food options.

Many festival-goers complained they had spent anywhere from 30-minutes to an hour stuck in traffic trying to get to the festival, but added that the ‘Karachi Eat 2015’ more than compensated for the time lost and expressed their desire for more such festivals to be held giving families a healthy atmosphere to socialize in and satisfy their appetite for some delicious food. Having braved the traffic, one patron was quite positive that as the festival grows such issues would be better managed. “They just have to keep [the festival] happening, it’s not going to happen overnight, it’ll take a year or two,” said Hisham Adamjee who was at the festival with his wife and daughter, before adding: “look at the turnout, this is pretty good. This is a Saturday, tomorrow a lot more people are expected.” Overall, everyone at the festival was grateful for the opportunity to spend their day surrounded by family, friends and the one thing all Karachiites love: lots and lots of food.
