Subject : What's the best way to avoid being struck by lightning if you're outdoors? First, you should know that if you can hear thunder, you're within striking distance of lightning. It at all possible, find a safe shelter. Once inside, stay away from electrical appliances, corded phones, plumbing, windows and doors. Don't lean against cement walls or lie down on a cement floor. There is no safe place outside in a thunderstorm. If, however, there is no vehicle or enclosed structure around, avoid tall, isolated objects like a lone tree or electrical pole. Likewise, stay away from water and anything wet, and metal objects (like fences or poles). If you're on the water, try to get back to land. If that's not practical, and you're on a small boat with no cabin, drop anchor and get as low in the boat as you can. If someone is struck by lightning, immediately call 9-1-1; if the victim is not breathing, begin CPR right away. Every year there are some 25 million lightning flashes and about 50 people are killed each year by lightning.
