In a policy aimed at benefitting country’s 120 crore population, the Union Government of India on 4 July 2012 unveiled the 5.4 billion dollar free drug policy. Under the new policy, every citizen of the country will be provided free medicines in all public health centres spreaded across the country. As the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare kept branded drugs out of this policy, the patients will be given only generic drugs. The policy which will remain effective over the next five years will provide a much needed support to nearly 40 percent people of the country, which spends 1.25 dollar or less a day on health.

Sonia Gandhi ranked number six in the Forbes magazine?s list of the world?s 100 most powerful women. Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance and the Congress party is among the five Indian women who have been named in the world?s 100 most powerful women list. The other four Indian women in the list are Indira Nooyi (12), Padmashree Warrior (58), Chanda Kochar (59) and Kiran Mazzomdar Shaw (80). Gandhi was figured on 7th position in the list of powerful women in 2011. German Chancellor Angella Markel topped the list for a second successive year. She was followed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who have been ranked number two and three respectively for second year in a row. Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and wife of Microsoft Corp co-founder Bill Gates, and Jill Abramson, executive editor of the New York Times was ranked fourth and fifth respectively. Michelle Obama, wife of the US President Barak Obama and IMF director Christine Lagarde ranked seventh and eighth respectively in the list. The magazine?s list included women who have been working in the areas such as policymaking, business, entertainment, technology and nonprofit organizations.

Russia formally became a member of the World Trade Organisation(WTO) on 22 August 2012 after 18 years of negotiations. Russia agreed to reduce import tariffs on goods, including food and cars and to relax controls on overseas companies entering its financial and telecom sectors. Russia will be the 156th member of the WTO.

Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in August 2012 permitted seven Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs) to start operation in India under a newly formulated route thatenable pooling of funds for investments in areas such as real estate, private equity and hedge funds. Six AIFs registered with the regulator in August 2012, while one was granted registration back on 23 July 2012. SEBI had published its guidelines with regard to AIF in May 2012.

The Supreme Court in its verdict for routing of the allocation of Natural Resources on 27 September 2012 directed that the Auction being a preferable method for allotment of the natural resources can‘t be turned up to be a constitutional limitation or requirement. The Supreme Court passed the statement in relation to the 2 G Presidential Reference in form of its advisory opinion. The Supreme Court bench of five judges comprising Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia and Justices D.K. Jain, Dipak Misra, J.S. Khehar and Ranjan Gogoi in its statement declared that auctioning is one of the several methods that can be used in distribution of natural resources. The bench also stated that it is the government, who is responsible to decide the ways of distribution with concerns of common good.

India is going to expand bilateral trade with Malaysia to $15 billion by 2013 from $13 billion in 2011-12 as per the discussion in India- Malaysia CEO Forum. The sales of cars in India declined in the month of August 2012 by an overall 19 percent. It is counted among the biggest drop in one year timeline, resulting to which Society of Indian automobile Manufacturer (SIAM) asked the government to cut the excise duty. The next disappointing part is that the export of cars is also declined to a figure of 26.83 percent in the August month which has affected overall production of companies in India. It is the highest decline in 11 years of time. The automobile industry has entered into a desperate situation.

Thales announced a joint venture on 5 September 2012 to manufacture radars for civilian and defence purposes. High jumper Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda, India won a silver medal (F42 single leg, amputations minimal disability category) at London Paralympic Games. To make this happen, he cleared his career best 1.74 m high jump. He managed to secure the first medal for the country in this category of game. Girisha won eighth Paralympic medal for India and is the first to do so in the high jump category and third Indian to claim silver in the event. He is a man with polio impaired left leg. To win the medal he used the scissor kick technique.
