US swimmer Michel Phelps became the most successful athlete in the history of Olympic games after he won the gold medal in 4x200 metre freestyle relay in final race at the Aquatic Centre on 31 July 2012. Phelps, who is playing his 4th Olympics, with this victory took his individual Olympic tally to 19 (15 gold, two silver and two bronze), surpassing the 18 won by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina between 1956 and 1964.

Assam’s Kokrajhar district remained a recipient of violence since 20 July 2012. Nineteen people have been killed so far in sporadic incidents of violence which resulted into a clamp night curfew on 21 July 2012.The whole incident started on 6 July 2012 when the violence got triggered with the firing on two student leaders , Mohibul Islam of All Bodoland Minority Students' Union (ABMSU) and Abdul Siddique Sheikh of All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) by unidentified gunmen at Anthihara in Kokrajhar. The Violence continued as, on 20 July 2012, four activists of former militant outfit Bodo Liberation Tigers were shot dead by unidentified persons in Joypur. In reply to the act, armed Bodos attacked Muslims, suspecting them to be behind the killings and soon communal violence spread across the district. The violence took to a rather serious level by 23 July 2012 with the protesters stopping the Guwahati-New Delhi Rajdhani Express.

India called on all nations within and outside Syria to fully cooperate with international envoy Kofi Annan to bring an end to the ongoing crisis situation in Syria. Hardeep Singh Puri, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador while addressing a Security Council open debate on the situation in the Middle East, stated that India does not see an alternative to the full implementation of UN resolutions 2042 and 2043 for a political resolution of the crisis without any further bloodshed. India urged all parties to fully cooperate with international envoy, Kofi Annan and bring an end to the bloodshed and crisis in Syria.

The supreme court banned all tourism activities in the core areas of the tiger reserve forests on 24 July 2012. Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice Ibrahim passed the order on a petition filed by conservationist Ajay Dubey. The petition sought a directive to the States to notify the buffer and peripheral areas of the tiger reserves, under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, to prevent tourism in the core areas.

The market regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on 23 July 2012 tightened eligibility and exit criteria for stocks in the derivatives segment by increasing the benchmark liquidity level for any scrip to be eligible for trading in the derivatives segments. By doing away with illiquid stocks SEBI aims to check manipulation. According to the circular issued by SEBI, scrips with a minimum trading volume value of Rs 10 lakh and market wide position limit (MWPL) or market capitalisation of Rs 300 crore cannot be eligible for entry into the Future and Options (F&O) segment.

Delhi teams, both in male and female categories, lifted 23rd Federation Cup Throw Ball Championship-2012. The Championship which was held on 23-25 August 2012, was organised by the J&K Throw Ball Association in collaboration with Throw Ball Federation of India at sports ground Government College for Women M A Road Srinagar. As many as 20 teams, both in male and female categories, from various States and Union Territories of the country participated in the Championship. Delhi beat Tamil Nadu 15-10, 15-12 in the women?s final of the Federation Cup National throwball championship which was held in Srinagar. In the men?s final, Delhi beat Andhra Pradesh 2-1. Nine State teams took part in the championship.

Aditi Mukherjee, a Delhi based scientist, won the prestigious Norman Borlaug Award in Field Research and Application. Mukherjee was picked for the award for her work in transforming access to water for thousands of farmers in West Bengal. The award will be formally presented to Mukherji on 17 October 2012 in Des Moines, Iowa, US. Mukherji, 37, is a senior researcher at the Delhi office of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI). As alumnus of Presidency College (Kolkata), JNU (Delhi), she completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge. The international award is conferred by the World Food Prize Foundation, which was started by Norman Borlogue, the father of Green Revolution in India. The award carries 10000 dollar cash prize. The Borlaug Award is restricted to scientists under 40.
